January 8, 2019 was the Serrans first meeting of the New Year. We started with rosary and Mass in the beautiful church of St. Hugo of the Hills. Our celebrant was Father John Maksym, associate at St. Joseph the Worker parish, in Lake Orion.
Tom Scholler, Vice President of Membership, then inducted three new members into the club. We are very pleased to welcome Peter Samoray, Graham Walker and Nina Walker. They will be great assets to our club.
Following Mass, we met in the gathering room for fellowship and a delicious dinner. Out time together is one of the highlights of our meetings.
Father John Maksym gave an inspiring talk about his journey to vocation to the priesthood. Father Maksym attended Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and was ordained in May 2018. His road to the priesthood took many turns. He is a lawyer, was a naval officer and a naval Judge. His call to the priesthood followed him as he pursued his many accomplishments. After years of discernment, he happily followed his call. He is a very energized and engaging man with a joyful manner. He said he believes that the Serrans are “the foot soldiers for vocations”.
Some of the upcoming plans for the Serrans include traveling to the Seminary for the “Dinner For Life”, hosted by the current seminarians. It’s a great evening with the proceeds given to a pro-life organization.
Also, we will have our yearly Valentine cookie bake. Our club members bake dozens of cookies, package them up, and they are delivered to the seminarians. We like to show our support and love to them.
Coming up in March is our annual Desert Meal. This meal, along with donations from the attendees, helps to send the first year theology seminarians to the Holy Land for prayer and further commitment to their vocation. This meal, a potluck, will be held on March 24 at Shrine of the Little Flower grade school gym in Royal Oak, Michigan. If you are interested in attending, or have any questions, please contact us.
